Offline programming (OLP) is the biggest time saver in robot cell projects: 80% of the program is done before the robot arrives on site. In an ABB environment, RobotStudio is the tool — here are the first steps.

1. An accurate digital twin

A simulation is only as good as its model. The cell CAD, the torch geometry and the TCP must be built to millimetre accuracy — otherwise on-site correction eats up the time OLP saved.

2. Paths and collision checking

Weld paths can be generated from CAD edges, and collision checking runs across the whole motion range. The critical point is torch orientation: the right work angle is a weld-quality question.

3. Synchronising with reality

On site, after calibration (cell frame, work object), only fine-tuning of the program remains — typically 20% of the total programming time. Teaching time drops dramatically and production starts sooner.
